FAQs

How does Depaul France help homeless people?

We believe that access to basic hygiene and health case is one of the most important first steps in regaining self-esteem, confidence, and, one day, a place to call home and a stake in society. With our mobile shower service and our day and health care centre we are helping meet the basic needs of rough sleepers in Paris.

Why are you based in the 15th arrondissement of Paris?

There are fewer services for homeless people in this part of Paris. When we carried out our needs research we found that there was no specific service that would help homeless people around hygiene and health care needs. We are acting quickly to fill this gap.

I've never heard of Depaul...

Depaul France is a new charity (registered as a 'loi 1901' charity in France in June 2013). We are part of Depaul International, a group of charities that helps homeless and marginalised people around the world. We have 25 years' experience in helping homeless people of all ages.

What made you set up in Paris?

Homelessness and urban poverty are global problems. Depaul France benefits from the global expertise of the Depaul group in contributing to solutions which will help homeless people in Paris. Our partners in Paris (the Daughters of Charity and other members of the Vincentian family as well as donors and local charities in the 15th arrondissement) have welcomed our presence into their networks so that our work can be reinforced by these partnerships.

Where can I find out more about the charity?

We invite you to visit our website : www.depaulfrance.org. Here you can find background information on the charity as well as updates on our activities. You can also make a donation online or find out more about volunteering. We are also on Facebook and Twitter.

What will my donation be used for?

Your donation will help homeless people to take the first steps out of homelessness and towards a more positive future. Our day centre and mobile shower service receive no public funding and so it is only through the generosity of our donors that we are able to provide our health and hygiene services.

Is it safe to donate online?

Online donations to Depaul France are processed through the funding platform Hello Asso which operates a secure online payment facility. Hello Asso specialises in collecting donations for charities and no commission is taken from the transactions. French tax receipts are issued automatically.

Can I make a donation in any other way?

You can send a cheque made payable to Depaul France to our office at : 41, rue des Périchaux, 75015 Paris. We will send out French tax receipts for donations over 10 euros[1].

Who are your partners and donors?

We work in partnership with a wide range of charities and public bodies as well as religious organisations. Our founding member and principal supporter are the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. We also work with other members of the worldwide Vincentian family including the AIC (Equipes Saint Vincent in France), the Lazarists and the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. Our network encompasses public bodies such as the town hall of the 15th arrondissement, statutory health services and local charity partners. We receive no public funding and so rely completely on the generosity of our partners, donors and volunteers.

Do you think that there isn't enough help for homeless people in France?

The number of homeless people keeps increasing. Homelessness has increased by 50% between 2001 et 2012 (according to latest research from the French national statistics office). With need increasing day by day we believe that we have a role to play in contributing to the network of help that is available to homeless people in France.

Are there too many charities helping homeless people?

How about asking homeless people themselves?!

Do you have any projects outside Paris?

We launched a mobile shower service in June 2014. Later this year we will open a major project in Paris : a health and day care centre called "Accueil Périchaux". Our attention is focused on these two projects for the moment but we hope that, with your help, we can develop numerous other services in Paris and beyond.

Do you provide accommodation for homeless people?

No, at the moment we do not provide any accommodation services for homeless people. We work in partnership with others who provide housing. Our objectives for 2015 are to meet the health and hygiene needs of rough sleepers in Paris.
